Note: The twin tail grub, a soft plastic fishing lure with two curly tails at the end, is believed to be an evolution of the basic “grub” style bait, which was one of the first soft plastic lures used by anglers, mimicking small baitfish with its curly tail action; the addition of a second tail on each side simply amplified the movement and vibration, making it even more attractive to fish, particularly in clear water situations where subtle action is key.

Key points about the twin tail grub’s history:
  • Early Grubs:
The original concept of a “grub” was a simple soft plastic body with a single curly tail, often fished on a jig head, designed to imitate small baitfish when retrieved steadily through the water column.

  • Twin Tail Variation:
Anglers later developed the “twin tail” design by adding a second tail on each side of the grub body, creating a more pronounced fluttering and vibration when retrieved, making it particularly effective for attracting fish in clear water conditions.

  • Popular Manufacturers:
Companies like Zoom Bait Company, Yamamoto, Berkley, and Strike King have all produced popular variations of twin tail grubs, often with different body shapes and sizes to suit different fishing situations.

  • Fishing Applications:
Twin tail grubs are commonly used as jig trailers, on spinnerbaits, or even fished alone on a jig head depending on the desired presentation.
